Demystifying Real Food
Realistic FoodEs is a Blog promoting a Real Food lifestyle. My name is Rowena Mahloch. And my Mission is to Empower people to find their BEST selves through Real Food.
Real Food is food that is closest to its form in nature. So a Real Food lifestyle is the practice of eating unprocessed or minimally processed foods that are sustainably farmed and prepared with no added sugar or unhealthy ingredients. WOW! Now that's a mouthful of tasty morsels to chew on, isn't it? But no worries, I'll post bunches of Articles on this Blog to breakdown these Real Food concepts into digestible bites. And yes, all these puns are intended because Real Food is fun!
But in the spirit of keeping it Real, I want to be straight with you from the start - a Real Food lifestyle is not easy or cheap. So if Real Food is a new concept, then eating this way 100% of the time may not be realistic at this point (maybe not ever, depending on your circumstances). Great if you can do this. But for many people, the concept of eating Real Food may sound too time consuming and expensive. And if this is you, then setting out to be 100% Real Food compliant right away creates an immediate barrier. Other barriers may also make this lifestyle a challenge - like living in an area where Real Food is not readily available (as in a food desert). So if this is an issue, you may need time to navigate your local food system to find ways to buy more Real Food.
This is my philosophy: A Real Food lifestyle is a lifetime process, and a unique challenge for everyone's situation. I encourage setting reasonable goals that are attainable within a realistic timeframe. But always continuing to challenge yourself. Unless you have a medical condition that requires avoiding certain foods, what you eat are choices. The goal of Realistic FoodEs is to provide tools (strategies, tips, techniques and research) to help you make choices that - on balance - involve eating more Real Food than ultra-processed food. And if you stick with me on this blogging journey, I'll help you find that "sweet spot" of eating Real Food most of the time and only ultra-processed foods on occasion (i.e., when the occasion warrants it).
A Real Food lifestyle can be easier and more affordable. This Blog is a platform to demystify the concepts of Real Food and ease the barriers to help you find a realistic path to Eat, Enjoy and Embrace Real Food.
My Food Ideology
My relationship with food is rooted in self-care and social responsibility. The articles posted on this Blog will address Real Food concepts within this context.
Self-care involves taking intentional steps to care for your physical, mental and emotional health. Food is a type self-care that is often overlook. When we get busy we tend to make "grab & go" or "quick and easy" choices with our food. And who among us is not incredibly busy? So food is often consumed without intention. But planning is the key to a Real Food lifestyle. It's so important that I bolded and italicized the word for emphasis! Thus, eating Real Food is the epitome of eating with intention, and an effective way to practice good self-care.
A Real Food lifestyle also promotes social responsibility because it is based on eating sustainably sourced foods. These are foods (plants and animals) produced using farming techniques that protect the environment, public health, communities, and animal welfare without compromising the ability for future generations to do the same. So sustainable farming is consistent with the principle of eating food in its most natural form. And in this sense, practicing a Real Food lifestyle is not only about what we eat, but also a reflection of our values.
I'll be honest though, I don't have all the answers. And what worked for me, may not work for you. Or you may have ideas and information that helped you and may help others. So I am interested in hearing from you! Let's build a social community to make the concept of eating Real Food accessible to everyone.
