Real Food Is Naturally Nutritious

Choose Health

Last week I discussed how the food we eat affects liver function. I believe that knowledge is power. So knowing the damage processed food, particularly ultra-processed food, does to the liver (and thus overall health) can empower us to make better decisions about food. When we choose Real Food, we are respecting our bodies. And choosing a path towards lifelong health.

What Is Food?

But let's take a step back and consider the overarching question of "What is food?" We probably don't think much about this concept because our innate understanding is food is what we eat or drink, right? But if you "Google" this question, the definitions all discuss food in terms of nutrition:

Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the body. It is usually of plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals. The substance ingested by an organism and assimilated by the organism’s cells to provide energy, maintain life, or stimulate growth.

Hmmmm . . . Now there's some food for thought πŸ€” Food is way more than just what we eat or drink. Food has a purpose. To provide essential nutrients to the body. And the body needs these nutrients:

  • For energy
  • To maintain life
  • To support growth

In other words, food is the delivery system for essential nutrients needed to sustain life. Real Food -- food that is whole, unprocessed, unrefined and closest to it's natural form is synergistically balanced to provide these essential nutrients that the body needs and can readily use for energy and life!

Real Food = Nutrients = Energy = Life!

But so much of the food sold in stores is processed. Don't believe me? Read this article  πŸ‘‰πŸ½ Mental Steps

So while food nutrition labels might provide the numbers to represent nutrition. And the marketing and advertising on the packages may promise nutrition. If the INGREDIENTS Labels list words (ingredients) that you don't know, don't understand, can't pronounce, or sounds like a chemical. This is not the quality of nutrition the body needs πŸ˜πŸ˜ΆπŸ‘ŽπŸ½

I am not advocating to ignore the nutrition labels. Go ahead, if it's important to you. But the real truth about what is in that food item is listed in the INGREDIENTS πŸ˜€πŸ˜πŸ‘

Now, not all processed foods are bad. For example, frozen produce that only lists the whole food like spinach, broccoli, berries, etc. is still Real Food. But frozen foods with, say, a cheese sauce or some other sauce/additive is closer to the ultra-processed end of the spectrum. And ought to be avoided πŸ˜πŸ˜ΆπŸ‘ŽπŸ½

Bottom-line: If you want a healthy, happy liver. If you want to eat food that delivers nutrients for energy and lifelong health. THEN EAT REAL FOOD. And the most effective way to do this is to "Read Words (Ingredients), NOT numbers" πŸ™ŒπŸ½πŸ€“πŸ“–πŸ˜
