Yep . . . You read that right. Tim & I are treating ourselves to an unsweetened life. No refined, hidden, or artificial sugars as typically found in processed foods. Not even natural sweeteners like honey, dates or coconut sugar, which are Real Food sweeteners. Starting today and for the next 21 days, we're just saying NO!
Now that I've put myself out there as a Real Food Maven, I decided to recalibrate our eating practices. A gut check of sorts -- both literally and figuratively. Because continually reassessing where we are on our journey is another tool for our Real Food Toolbox.
This is not our first sugarless rodeo. We've done this before. But always just powered through on our own. This time we're following The 21-Day Sugar Detox (The 21DSD). A Program designed by Diane Sanfilippo of Balanced Bites. I've been following her for years -- She's one of my Paleo goddesses :-)
And despite the term "Detox", this is not about deprivation or extremely restrictive eating (i.e., very low calorie or very low fat diets). I've researched other sugar elimination programs. And I chose this because it is consistent with the Realistic FoodEs philosophy: No gimmicks. No Pills or Powders. No shakes, smoothies or special diet food (that you have to buy).
Just 21 days dedicated to eating Real Foods -- quality proteins, healthy fats, and good carbs. During this time, the body naturally cleanses itself of sugars. Changing not only the foods we choose to eat, but also our food habits and the way our palates react to sweet foods.
How is this different from what we've been eating? Well, we are not Perfectly Paleo or 100% Real. So occasionally we venture off-course to enjoy special events: Fundraiser, 4th of July, Tim's birthday. And last week was "Burger Week": 36+ area restaurants created special burgers (not on the regular menu) for only $5. We noshed on some delicious burgers paired with beers from Lexington's Blue Stallion Brewery. Burgers and Beer -- What Yummy FUN . . . FUN . . . FUN!!!
We don't have any other events on the calendar. So this is a good time for us to hit "Reset". And get back to Real Food!
The next 21 days won't be easy. So please send positive energy our way. In return, I'll share my experience by recapping each day -- the good, the bad, and the ugly -- through Daily Posts. So check back here every day through August 8th for some brutally honest words about my sugarless life.
Kick Sugar To The Curb!
If you decide to take this challenge, please let me know. I have received so much support and positive energy from you all. That I would like to return the favor :-)
