So let's be label detectives 🔎 and decode some terminology on this package of chicken. Note that I didn't buy this -- just took a photo 📷😜
And let's take it from the top, shall we? First, the USDA does not define "All Natural". So this can mean anything or nothing at all 😐😑
How about "All Vegetarian Diet"? As humans, this may sound like a good idea. BUT chickens are natural omnivores, NOT vegetarians 😏 This means chickens need to eat greens, seeds, worms, insects, and other creepy crawlers and critters 🌱🍃🐛🐌🐞🐜🕷 So an "All Vegetarian Diet" is downright UNNATURAL for chickens 😝👎🏽
Animal byproducts are derived from unused parts of other animals (meat and bone meal, feather meal and/or manure, eggs and hatchery waste). And commonly used as feed ingredients. So "No Animal Byproducts" obviously means that these chicken eat a diet doesn't contain these slaughter byproducts. Which may be a good thing, right? But isn't this basically the same as saying "All Vegetarian Diet"? So I see no NEW information with this statement 🤔😕
Bottom line is these terms are strong indicators that the chickens were raised in confinement on an industrialized farming facility 😠😖💩 Not raised on a pasture freely moving around to scratch and forage as nature intended 💯🌱🐓⚖🌎💚🙌🏽👍🏽
As for the terms "No Hormones" and "Raised Cage Free" on the label. These will take a bit more analysis. And I plan on discussing those in 2 separate articles that I'll post over the next week.
I prefer to keep things simple and focused. So as not to overwhelm. Please be sure to check back in then 🤗😘😍
